A Peek into One Criminal-Neglected Day in Lucknow, the Capital of Uttar Pradesh
Raw and Real: Squeezing the Most Out of Lucknow in Just One Whacked Day
Last ditch attempt to explore Lucknow with an overpriced rickshaw and a dash of stubbornness? Hell yeah! I was in Uttar Pradesh for the wild Kumbh Mela festival, and what followed was a trip of challenges, oopsies, and some regrets. But hey, it's all part of the twisted adventure, right?
One of my biggest blunders? A 12-hour bus ride that landed me and my cool pal, Vicky, hours behind schedule. The Kumbh Mela? One gigantic, insane human gathering on earth. Exhausted and battling a Delhi belly, we forged on to get a taste of Lucknow's food and architecture in just one short, crazy day. So buckle up, and let's dive into the unconventional highlights!
How in the Eff to Get to Lucknow?
Lucknow's the capital of the Uttar Pradesh Region, so it's connected with regular domestic flights to biggies like Delhi and other parts of India. It even accepts a few international flights from hotspots like Oman, Dubai, and Bangkok. Worried about getting there from the Taj Mahal? No prob, hop on a bus from Agra, or grab a train from Lucknow's station if you fancy it.
Truth Bomb: The Visa Scene
Got a UK passport? Don't be like Vicky, who nearly missed her flight because she didn't know about India's visa requirements—she WILL turn you away, mate! So, don't skimp on getting your e-visa sorted in advance! And while it can be a bit of an ordeal (pro tip: it's one of the trickier visas I've applied for), you can always shell out a few extra quid for some help from an agency if you feel overwhelmed.
After Getting Your Butt to Lucknow...
Whatever you do, don't sleep on the magical city of Varanasi. Even if you can only spend a day in Varanasi, you'll freak out over how special it is!
Where to Stay in Lucknow?
I spent my time at the swanky Hyatt Regency (it was a work gig), but if you're on a tighter budget, there are a few cool hostels like Poshtel Lucknow that might tickle your fancy.
What to See in Lucknow's Insane One-Day Whirlwind?
Yes, there's more to see than what we managed to cover in our manic dash, but here are some hotspots that'll get you started—and even a few off-the-beaten-path gems!
Rumi Darwaza
You don't even need to get out of your rickshaw for a good view of Lucknow's main attraction! In 1784, the Rumi Darwaza welcomed visitors with its grandeur and intricacies, and it still looks awesome today, especially when it's all lit up at night!
Ghanta-Ghar Clock Tower
Right next to Rumi Darwaza, you'll spot the Ghanta-Ghar or Big Ben of Lucknow. Honestly, we didn't have much time to check the place out, but it's a good photo op!
Bara Imambara
This massive complex blew my mind with its stunning mosque and lush gardens—I'd highly recommend splashing the cash for the camera pass to snap some killer shots!
Giggle Alert: The Residency… Yeah, That Residency
History buffs, gather 'round! The Residency was once the fortified complex of British governors who ruled over India during those colonial days—yeah, those guys. It's a somber spot to reflect on Lucknow's storied past with all those ruins and lush greenery.
Chota Imambara: Remarkably Small but Impressive Nonetheless
Chota Imambara is a quick pit stop on your tour, where you'll see LOTS of chandeliers just waiting to make your jaw drop—if you can visit outside of prayer times, go for it!
Foodie Alert: Mughlai Cuisine is a Must
I'd heard so much about Lucknow's famous Mughlai food, and I was psyched to try it. But time was against us on our trip, so my buddy Janet went on a food tour and said it was freaking amazing! Check out her Lucknow food vid for more!
Jewel in the Crown: Jama Masjid
Lucknow has so many mosques, and each one's different and stunning in its own way! Unfortunately, Jama Masjid was closed for visitors when we visited—but we still got to walk around the gorgeous outside.
Serene Sanctuary: Mushir Zadi Mosque
I dug this mosquey spot, even though we couldn't get inside. The gardens are neat as a pin, and it's a peaceful little oasis in the middle of the bustling city!
That's a wrap! Of course, there are a billion other spots I would've loved to see, but if you're short on time like we were, this itinerary should give you a taste of Lucknow's cultural, historical, and architectural richness.
