Airlines giant American Airlines to initiate complimentary Wi-Fi access for its AAdvantage loyalty program members, set to commence in 2026.
American Airlines is set to launch a free Wi-Fi service for its passengers, starting January 2026. The move comes as the airline aims to catch up with its competitors and improve its in-flight internet offerings.
In partnership with AT&T, American Airlines plans to connect more than 500 regional jets with high-speed internet by the end of 2025, and outfit more than 90% of its fleet with the service. This means that over 2 million flights per year will offer free Wi-Fi to passengers.
The free Wi-Fi will be available on aircraft equipped with Viasat and Intelsat high-speed satellite connectivity. AAdvantage members will have access to this service, but since joining the loyalty program is free, all passengers will be able to get online without paying exorbitant fees.
For AAdvantage members, in-flight internet has been an expensive pain point, but this is about to change with the introduction of free Wi-Fi. American Airlines has also recently lifted the requirement for passengers to detach keyboards from their handheld devices during taxi, takeoff, and landing.
Comparatively, Delta and JetBlue already offer free Wi-Fi to their passengers, while United is rolling out high-speed Starlink internet this spring.
Here's a breakdown of the Wi-Fi offerings from major airlines:
| Airline | Free Wi-Fi Availability | Cost if not free | Notes | |------------------|----------------------------------------------|---------------------------------|---------------------------------------------------------| | American | Free starting Jan 2026 for AAdvantage members on ~90% of fleet | Previously paid; details not yet fully disclosed | Partnership with AT&T; free for loyalty members (free to join)[2][3][5] | | JetBlue | Free on all flights | N/A | One of the few airlines to offer free Wi-Fi universally[1][4] | | Delta | Free for T-Mobile customers, expanding free options | Paid plans $6–$25 on other flights | Offers mixed free and paid Wi-Fi depending on plan[1][4] | | United | Similar to Delta; free for some wireless customers | Typically $6–$25 for standard users | Rolling out better free Wi-Fi, similar to Delta and AA[1][4] |
American Airlines is catching up with JetBlue, Delta, and United by providing extensive free Wi-Fi at no cost to most passengers through its loyalty program and AT&T partnership. JetBlue remains the leader in offering free Wi-Fi broadly with no strings attached. Delta and United offer a hybrid approach currently, with free Wi-Fi primarily for select wireless plan customers and paid access otherwise.
