Alone, a leading Irish charity, has reported a significant increase in its support for older people in 2024. The organisation, which focuses on tackling loneliness and isolation among the elderly, has seen a 28% rise in the number of new older people it supports, with a record-breaking 43,986 individuals receiving assistance throughout the year.

Alone's chief executive has highlighted the urgent need for Ireland to prepare for the challenges of an ageing population. The charity supports more women than men, with 1.5 women being supported for every man. Key areas where older people seek support include mobility problems, housing issues, and financial concerns.

In 2024, Alone made a total of 322,546 telephone support and befriending contacts, a combined 18% increase from 2023. This includes 109,040 visitation support and befriending visits and 213,506 telephone support calls. The charity's volunteers contributed a remarkable 264,430 hours in 2024, valued at up to €7.81 million.

Globally, the number of people over 60 years old is projected to reach 2.1 billion by 2050, underscoring the importance of Alone's work and the need for continued support and awareness.

Alone's impressive growth in supporting older people in 2024 reflects the increasing importance of addressing the challenges faced by Ireland's ageing population. With a record number of individuals receiving assistance, the charity's efforts to tackle loneliness and isolation are more crucial than ever. As the global population continues to age, Alone's work serves as a reminder of the need for continued support and investment in services that improve the lives of older people.
