Annual Count of Non-Performing Loan (NPL) Sites, Classified by Their Status, at Completion of Each Financial Year
Cleaning Up the National Priorities List: A Look at Progress Over the Years
In 1996, a significant change was introduced to the National Priorities List (NPL) with the implementation of a policy to allow partial deletions at sites. This policy has played a crucial role in managing the cleanup of contaminated sites across the country.
Before this change, the focus was on completing constructions at the NPL sites. In 1995, there were 40 proposed NPL sites and a total of 346 construction completions at these sites. The following year, the number of construction completions increased to 410, while the number of proposed sites remained the same.
The 1990s saw a steady decrease in the number of sites on the NPL. In 1995, there were 90 deleted NPL sites, a number that increased to 124 in 1996. This trend continued into the new millennium, with 338 deleted NPL sites in 2009. By 2010, a total of 27 sites had been removed from the NPL between 1990 and 2011.
The number of proposed NPL sites fluctuated over the years. In 1995, there were 1232 NPL sites, which decreased to 1211 in 1996 and then increased to 1270 in 2009. In 2010, the number of proposed sites dropped to 53.
The number of construction completions also varied. In 2009, there were 1080 construction completions at NPL sites, a significant increase from the 346 in 1995. However, in 2010, the number of construction completions decreased to 1098.
Partial deletions at NPL sites began in 1996, with 63 partial deletions that year. This number increased over the years, with 68 partial deletions in 2010. At the end of fiscal year 2024, a total of 156 partial deletions have occurred at 116 sites.
The implementation of the policy to allow partial deletions at sites has been instrumental in managing the NPL and ensuring a cleaner environment for all. The progress made over the years is a testament to the effectiveness of this policy and the commitment of those involved in its execution.
