Arson occured at an Australian synagogue as a perpetrator ignited a blaze on the door, yet no one was harmed in the incident.

A shocking arson attack on a synagogue in East Melbourne on Friday evening has left the community on edge, with authorities launching a thorough investigation. The Counter Terrorism Security Investigation Unit is leading the probe into the incident, but as of now, no definitive link to the ongoing Hamas assault on Israel has been reported.

According to police reports, an unidentified man was seen pouring a flammable liquid and setting fire to the front entrance of the synagogue while around 20 people were inside attending Shabbat prayers. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the front door, and no one was injured during the evacuation.

Authorities are currently probing the suspect's intent and ideology to determine if the incident constitutes terrorism. However, the matter has not been officially classified as a terrorism incident at this stage. Victoria Police Commander Zorka Dunstan described the fire as a serious crime, but emphasized that it does not meet the criteria for a terrorism incident as of now.

The Jewish community is being provided with support during this difficult time, and Victoria Police have released a CCTV image of a man they are interested in speaking to about the incident. The suspect is described as a man in his mid-30s, with a beard and long hair, wearing a dark blue or black sweater, black pants, and a black beanie, and carrying a large black bag.

In a statement, Danny Segal, the synagogue's president, called for the wider Australian community to stand with his congregation. He expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support from various communities and organizations, including Jewish and Muslim groups.

The arson attack on the Melbourne synagogue is not an isolated incident. Protesters also harassed diners in an Israeli-owned restaurant in downtown Melbourne on Friday night, breaking a Miznon restaurant window. Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece and Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan both condemned the incidents, with Allan describing them as designed to "traumatize Jewish families."

Israel's deputy foreign minister Sharren Haskel also condemned the attacks, adding to the growing international concern over the spike in hate-fueled incidents targeting both Jewish and Muslim communities in Australia. Hate researchers have reported drastic spikes in such incidents on both groups in the country since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel triggered the war in Gaza.

Victoria Police are also investigating an "arson attack and criminal damage" to a business in Greensborough, a suburb of Melbourne, which appears to be part of this wave of antisemitic attacks that have shaken Australia. The investigation is ongoing, and the community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
