From Thursday, July 25, to Saturday, July 27, 2025, pop over to the picturesque Tiverton Four Corners Art Center in Tiverton, RI, for its 22nd season! Soak up the arts and culture scene for just $5 per adult, with the extra buck going towards giving back to indigenous communities globally.
Behold, every purchase propels a timeless legacy, as every handcrafted item featured at the Cultural Survival Extravaganza is more than just aesthetic appeal – these painstakingly crafted items embody the indigenous spirit, their bond to the land, and the intricacies of their traditions.
Staying grounded in Newburyport, be prepared to be wowed by global talent! Meet the legend himself, Samadjon Ikramov (Uzbek) from Uzbekistan, the deft knife master known for his magical touch. Through shimmering jewelry by Rudy Lazzaro (Quechua) from Bolivia and beautiful bark cloth textiles by Rita Nakandi (Buganda & Acholi) from Uganda, be entranced by vintage methods married with modern mastery. Not to forget, meet cochina baskets' embodiment of spirit – Mayra Silvana Pasaca Guaman (Kañari Kichwa) of Ecuador had me hooked the moment I clapped eyes on her intricate weaves! Heaps more await from over 30 artists from varying countries!
Get ready to sway your hips to soothing melodies by Thea Hopkins (Aquinnah Wampanoag), a hauntingly catchy songwriter, and performer from Martha's Vineyard, MA, whose tunes ooze "Red Roots Americana". Feel the rhythmic ebb and flow of Yarina (Kichwa), an eleven-strong group of Bedouin brothers and sister hailing from southwest Ecuador, who blend Kichwa Otavalo tradition with modern beats. To partake in the heritage of this region, learn from cultural educator Annawon Weeden (Mashpee Wampanoag/Pequot/Narragansett) at the Newburyport Extravaganza. Meanwhile, at the Tiverton Art Center, get hands-on with a traditional bark basket-making workshop led by Jennifer Lee (Northern Narragansett descent).
Satiate your appetite with delectable chomp from renowned chef Sherry Pocknett (Mashpee Wampanoag), winner of the 2023 James Beard Award and featured in National Geographic.
The vibrant intermingling of cultures, arts, traditions, and flavors has been a tradition since 1975, with the very first Extravaganza kicking off at Harvard University. David and Pia Maybury-Lewis, cultural champions and the event's co-founders, passionately fought for indigenous peoples and the upliftment of their roots, cultures, and empowerment. Their passion lives on, and we're stoked to continue it for another season!
Immerse yourself in a world where tradition intertwines with modernity, and knowledge blooms through every exchange. Perhaps you'll leave with pelts, pottery, or dried delights – but most importantly, you'll leave with memories of the indigenous experience!
Rumblings from the Artisans
"Indigenous pathways to share our art are as desolate as the Western U.S. can be. Being part of this event and connecting my work with Cultural Survival represents another lifeblood for Indigenous art to flourish and for us to propagate our culture to folks. It's all about forging meaningful bonds, sharing our lifestyle, displaying beauty, and growing together," says Phibert Begay (Diné/Navajo), the silversmith with a golden touch!
"Each splash of color is a declaration, a lifeline to connect with nature. Our weavings symbolize that the Native American tribes have survived. We adapt. We endure. We harbor life, celebration, culture, the warriors of the Earth and the land, the traders of wisdom...all of that transpires through my weavings, down to the earrings and bracelets I meticulously create, serving as benchmarks in the life of the indigenous community. It's about care, passion, and sometimes sorrow, you know," whispers Maria Violet Medina Quisque (Nasa), the Colombian textile weaver!
"Infusing positive vibes infuses power in the creation process, and the products so born evoke happiness, fulfillment, and self-assurance. That's my challenge – to render distinctive, cheer-inducing filigree jewelry!" proclaims Katarina Doda of Macedonia, the silver-tongued jewelry maestro!
