Exploring the Rhön Section of the Iron Curtain Trail: A Journey Through History and Nature

The Rhön region in Germany is now home to a unique cycling experience, thanks to the redevelopment of the Iron Curtain Trail along the state border. This initiative was spearheaded by the Free State of Thuringia.

The Iron Curtain Trail, a part of the extensive EuroVelo 13 route, offers a one-of-a-kind experience space where history and nature seamlessly merge. As you pedal along, cyclists are treated to a particularly intense change of perspective, moving effortlessly between border history, natural heritage, and regionality.

Rhön GmbH, a local tourism organisation, warmly invites cyclists to discover the Iron Curtain Trail stage in the Rhön region. Whether you're embarking on a larger journey or planning a day or weekend tour by bike, the Rhön section of EuroVelo 13 promises an unforgettable adventure.

The Iron Curtain Trail, certified as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, symbolises the overcoming of Europe's division and passes through significant UNESCO sites, natural monuments, and historic locations. It runs through the Rhön region, which is located on the Green Belt, the former inner-German border strip.

Navigating the Rhön section of the Iron Curtain Trail is made easier with clear signposting. The route is marked with official EuroVelo 13 signage, making it simple for cyclists to follow the trail along the former border area. Detailed maps and GPS tracks for EuroVelo routes, including the Iron Curtain Trail, can be downloaded from the official EuroVelo website or local tourism sites related to the Rhön region.

Katharina Happel, the cycling project manager at Rhön GmbH, has been instrumental in ensuring the continuous signposting and better connection of the Iron Curtain Trail, making it more attractive for cyclists. Around 480,000 euros were provided for the coordination and signposting of the Iron Curtain Trail within the federal program "Radnetz Deutschland" (Bicycle Network Germany).

The completion of the signposting makes the Iron Curtain Trail more tangible than ever. In total, 19 districts from five federal states, including the Rhön districts in Thuringia, Bavaria, and Hesse, have committed to ensuring the seamless ridability and signposting of the Iron Curtain Trail.

After a complex approval and implementation process, a continuously signposted, nature-friendly route was realized. Rhön GmbH was involved in the interregional cooperation as a destination management organization.

For exact map downloads and route details, consulting the EuroVelo official pages or local Rhön tourist information is recommended. With the Rhön section of EuroVelo 13 now easily accessible, there has never been a better time to embark on this historical and scenic cycling journey.
