Historian and essayist Karl Schlögel has been awarded the 2025 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, a prestigious honour endowed with 25,000 euros. The award, which recognises significant contributions to peace and understanding in Europe, was announced by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels on Tuesday.

Schlögel, a renowned scholar of Eastern Europe, has been commended for his critical and honest work on Ukraine following the annexation of Crimea by Russia. His insights have challenged German perceptions and aroused curiosity, as well as challenging prejudices about the region.

The jury praised Schlögel for his unique way of conveying history and the present of Eastern Europe, describing him as a scientist, flâneur, an archaeologist of modernity, and a seismograph of societal changes. He is also recognised for being one of the earliest scholars to warn about Vladimir Putin's aggressive expansionist policy and authoritarian-nationalistic power grab.

Schlögel's work extends beyond historical perspectives, engaging directly with current politics and highlighting the threats posed by authoritarianism and the importance of defending democratic values in the region. His commitment to these ideals has earned him the 2024 Peace Prize.

Before the fall of the Iron Curtain, Schlögel explored cities and landscapes in Central and Eastern Europe. His deep expertise on Russia and Ukraine, combined with a keen focus on contemporary political dynamics, has made him a prominent voice in the discourse on Eastern Europe.

The award ceremony for Karl Schlögel will take place on October 19, 2025, in the Frankfurter Paulskirche. This marks a significant recognition of Schlögel's work and his contributions to promoting peace and understanding in Europe.
