Windjammer Festival in Bremerhaven Concludes with Over 1.2 Million Visitors
The Windjammer Festival, also known as SAiL 2025, took place from August 13 to August 17, 2025, in Bremerhaven, Germany. The festival featured over 100 ships, including some of the world's most historic and impressive vessels, attracting an estimated 1.2 million visitors by its conclusion.
The festival kicked off with an entry parade on August 13, led by the training ship "Alexander von Humboldt II." Notable ships participating included the "Gorch Fock," which escorted the arriving ships with the German Federal President on board, and the Norwegian full-rigged ship "Christian Radich," known for its sail training programs.
During the five-day programme, visitors had the opportunity to tour almost all ships and interact with sailors. The festival offered a diverse range of cultural, musical, and maritime events, with performances from pop singer Johannes Oerding, Irish singer Ronan Keating, and the group No Angels.
Colorful lights, lasers, drones, and fireworks displays provided evening entertainment, while historical replicas, such as the "Nao Santa Maria" and the Portuguese caravel "Vera Cruz," added an authentic touch to the event.
Some ships, like the Royal Navy's "Shabab Oman II" and the Uruguayan three-masted schooner "Capitán Miranda," traveled great distances to attend the festival. The smallest ship was the 5.4-meter-long catboat "Nanu" from Lake Dümmer, while the Norwegian wooden ship "Anna af Sand," at 171 years old, is one of the oldest active sailing ships in the world.
The Portuguese ship "Sagres II," a symbol of Portugal's seafaring history and the oldest ship in the Portuguese Navy, also made an appearance. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier opened the festival aboard the training ship "Gorch Fock," praising it as a peaceful gathering of dozens of nations.
However, the festival was not without incident. Emergency services were required to respond to incidents due to the heat, and a fire occurred on the ship "Mathilde," injuring two people. Mayor Melf Grantz regretted the absence of Russian ships at the festival and looked forward to their return in the future.
Despite these challenges, the Windjammer Festival in Bremerhaven proved to be a successful and memorable event, showcasing the rich history and culture of sailing and maritime traditions from around the world.
