Byron Bay's Famous Hotel Unveils 10-Suite Guesthouse, a Haven for Relaxed Design Enthusiasts

Raes Boutique Hotel in Byron Bay Transformed by Tamsin Johnson's Design

Raes, a chic boutique hotel located in the picturesque Wategos, Byron Bay, has undergone a stunning transformation thanks to the creative vision of interior designer Tamsin Johnson.

Johnson's design at Raes aims to stimulate memories, achieving a masterful balance between luxury and a laid-back, surfy Australian atmosphere. The interaction between playful and ultra-polished design elements creates an environment that encourages hedonism, while never veering into the comical.

The original Spanish-Hollywood style of the hotel is subtly carried into the guesthouses through the use of plasterwork. This architectural language, combined with maximalist interior design in Johnson's idiosyncratic style, gives Raes a novel, distinctively European stamp in the Australian hotel scene.

Custom-made local craftsmanship was used for the bed frames and canopies in the suites, while the individual suite rooms feature a blue and green pastel color palette. The hotel's communal areas exude a warm and inviting environment with Balearic influences.

Tamsin Johnson believes that the Spanish-Hollywood style is synonymous with the Raes brand, being a holiday spot that requires indulgence. In 2016, she masterfully redesigned Raes, and the hotel has since expanded to a second ten-suite guesthouse property, also designed by Johnson. Molded plasterwork was added to create a sense of dimension and character depth in the rooms.

However, the interior designer responsible for the renovation project of the second guesthouse has not been explicitly identified, and there is limited information on how the new furnishings compare to the original Raes hotel decor.

Raes, a stalwart of the beachy pocket for three decades, continues to be a popular destination for travelers seeking luxury and a unique Australian experience. The Spanish-Hollywood style remains a significant part of the Raes brand, making it a memorable and stylish choice for those looking for a chic getaway in Byron Bay.
