Clockwork marvels: A deep dive into the Waterbury Ogee (OG) 30-hour weight-driven clocks, and reasons they are underestimated in value

In the heart of Whitby, Ontario, the Canada Clock Co. crafted 30-hour weight-driven time and strike movements based on the American design, the Ogee movement, back in the day. One such Ogee clock, now in the hands of an avid clock enthusiast, was recently found in an antique store and has since become a cherished addition to the collection.

The Waterbury Ogee clock, a design that originated in the United States in the 1830s, is characterised by its S-shaped case and stands about 30 inches high. Brass movements in these clocks are more robust, easily transportable, and unaffected by humidity compared to wooden movements.

Despite its robustness and historical significance, the 30-hour Waterbury Ogee clock tends to be undervalued in today’s market. This is largely due to practical limitations, such as its shorter running time compared to more desirable 8-day or higher-end models, and the sheer number of these clocks that were produced.

Waterbury, an established 19th-century manufacturer, produced many of these clocks as affordable household timepieces, increasing supply on the current market and lessening rarity. Additionally, many of these clocks today show wear or require servicing, which negatively impacts value.

The acquired Ogee clock, approximately 1870 in age, has dimensions of 4 1/4 deep X 15 1/4 wide X 25 3/4 inches high and features a loud, frantic striking mechanism. Despite needing a thorough servicing to run for more than 15 minutes at a time, the author is drawn to its style and the history it carries.

The author's Waterbury Ogee clock has a Type 2.411 movement, which was introduced by the Waterbury Clock Co. in 1856-1857. A report on the servicing of this particular clock is expected in the coming weeks.

Despite their undervaluation, these clocks are not without their charm. Their simple design, coupled with their historical significance, makes them a unique addition to any collection. For those who appreciate the beauty in simplicity, the 30-hour Waterbury Ogee clock is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
