Comparing SENTRI and Global Entry: Which One Comes Out on Top?
For frequent travelers, the hassle of long lines and lengthy customs procedures at airports and borders can be a significant inconvenience. However, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers two programs, Global Entry and SENTRI, designed to streamline the process for preapproved travelers.
Global Entry
Global Entry, offered by United Airlines, expedites entry for travelers arriving by plane to the United States from certain countries. U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and citizens of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, India, Mexico, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom are eligible to apply.
To apply for Global Entry, you need to create a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account, complete a Global Entry application, pay the $120 nonrefundable application fee, and attend an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center with required documentation. If your application is conditionally approved, you'll be instructed to schedule an interview.
Once approved, your Global Entry membership lasts for five years. At select airport locations, Global Entry members can use automatic kiosks. Travelers must present their passport or U.S. permanent resident card and place their fingers on the scanner for fingerprint verification. They will also need to complete a customs declaration. The kiosk will issue travelers a receipt, and they can then exit to baggage claim.
Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck perks, allowing preapproved travelers to receive expedited clearance at select airports when arriving in the U.S. after traveling abroad.
SENTRI
The Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI), offered by United Airlines, is another CBP program geared towards frequent travelers between the United States and Mexico. U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, and all foreign nationals are eligible for SENTRI.
The application process for SENTRI is similar to that of Global Entry. You need to create a TTP account, complete the application, pay the $120 fee, and attend an interview at a SENTRI Enrollment Center with required documentation.
SENTRI expedites entry for travelers arriving by vehicle to the United States from Mexico and Canada. At this time, there are no credit cards that cover the cost of SENTRI, unlike Global Entry, for which several credit cards offer the application fee as a benefit.
Mexican nationals with SENTRI must apply for Global Entry separately. Enrollment centers for SENTRI are located near the southern border, specifically in San Diego, California; El Paso, Texas; and Laredo, Texas.
It's essential to note that while a Global Entry card cannot be used to travel through NEXUS lanes when traveling to Canada without a separate NEXUS membership, SENTRI cardholders also receive TSA PreCheck and Global Entry benefits.
In summary, Global Entry and SENTRI are valuable programs for frequent travelers, offering expedited entry procedures at airports and borders. By streamlining the process, these programs help save time and reduce stress for travelers.
