Here Comes the Party: Colonia Roma's Culinary Scene

With a beat-up baseball cap and saggy jeans, a young man blows his trombone in rhythm with passersby, their hips swaying to the soothing music. This streetside symphony takes place at the bustling intersection of a tree-lined boulevard, where each corner is adorned with Italian-style architectural marvels.

Welcome to Colonia Roma, Mexico City's most dynamic neighborhood and a haven for food enthusiasts. This suburb is a fusion of flavors from across the nation, served up with creative flair.

"Here, they're always cooking up something different, something creative," my guide Grace from Sabores Mexico Food Tours says as I take a mouthful of succulent seafood and pork carnitas.

At the first stop of our day-long culinary adventure, we visited Tres Gallons, a quaint restaurant that brought seafood tacos to the city following its chef's time spent on the Pacific Ocean. Even though seafood had historically been a rarity in the landlocked capital, this chef's innovative fusion of beloved flavors secured Tres Gallons a permanent spot in the city's gastronomic map.

Leaving Tres Gallons, Grace explained that the boom in incredible flavors in Roma didn't start until 2010. With 10% of the country's finest historic architecture and expense-heavy upkeep due to the neighborhood's slow sinking on a lake, owners converted the lower floors of these opulent buildings into restaurants, shops, and cafes to offset renovation costs.

As we made our way through Roma, we admired magnificent European-style architecture, renovated after the tragic 1985 earthquake, and watched as restaurants and chic bars continued to thrive. The unique juxtaposition of rustic Mexican roots with chic urban vibes makes Roma a one-of-a-kind destination.

Dining at Michelin-starred restaurants nestled within Art Nouveau windows, we marveled at the colorful street-food stalls and found ourselves in trendy restaurants with pricey wine lists. Yet, no matter how extravagant the meal, every bite was worth it.

Roma is a neighborhood with a rich history, from tales of clowns and circus owners to stories of wealthy residents, post-earthquake squatters, and the industrious spirit that drives the vibrant culinary scene. Even during challenging times like the recent pandemic, Roma remains a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation.

Programs like the Tourism Recovery Programme have provided vital support to local businesses, helping them stay afloat and adapt to the ever-changing economic landscape. Many tour operators, like Sabores Mexico Food Tours, have benefited from this collaboration, learning essential skills like leadership, digital marketing, and sustainability.
