Design Week in Dubai makes a comeback in November, emphasizing community involvement
Dubai Design Week 2021 is set to return, promising an exciting lineup of large-scale exhibitions, public discussions, and workshops from November 4 to 9. The event, which will take place at Dubai Design District (d3), will be the biggest to date, with more venues added across the district.
This year's theme is building more inclusive and connected communities, a perfect backdrop for the various events planned. Popular fixtures such as Downtown Design, Editions Art & Design, and the UAE Designer Exhibition supported by Dubai Culture will return, offering a platform for emerging talent and regional and international galleries and studios.
Editions, the region's only fair dedicated to limited-edition design and collectable art, will feature works from 50 such galleries and studios across various mediums. The UAE Designer Exhibition, reformatted to highlight emerging talent, will also be part of the 2021 event.
Abwab, the festival's curated pavilion series, will expand its geographic scope to include works from West, South and East Asia, Africa. The pavilions will be presented under the theme 'In the Details', exploring ornamentation and material culture through spatial design.
An international design competition called Urban Commissions will be part of this year's Dubai Design Week, focusing on architecture supporting community well-being. The full programme for Dubai Design Week 2021, including keynote speakers, installations, and featured designers, will be announced closer to the festival's opening date.
Workshops will continue to explore how design can foster social cohesion and shared civic life, a theme that aligns with the UAE's designation of 2025 as the Year of Community. The 2025 d3 Architecture Exhibition, a collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects, will also be on site, further emphasising the importance of community in design.
