German Family Rescued After Ignoring Warnings During Tenne Mountains Hike
Last night, a German family from Baden-Württemberg near Heidelberg was rescued from the Austrian Tenne Mountains in Salzburg. The family, comprising parents and three children aged 8, 10, and 14, initiated a distress call in the dead of the night after facing difficulties during their hike.
Initially setting out from Ellmau hut in Werfenweng (Pongau) at 8:30 a.m on Friday, their aim was to traverse the mountains and reach Solden hut via the Hochthron ladder, approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. Despite warnings from the Ellmau hut keeper regarding the challenging seven-hour tour, poor equipment, and old snow fields, the family decided to proceed.
Throughout the day, the father repeatedly called the hut keeper, informing him of a delayed arrival. However, by 11:00 p.m, he finally contacted the emergency number, stating their location near the Tauern saddle (2,100 meters), where they were unable to continue.
Within hours, eleven mountain rescuers from the Werfen local station arrived at the stranded group and managed to securely bring them back to the hut over old snowfields, reaching their destination unscathed at 3:15 a.m. "The family was chilled, but we provided them with warm clothing during the mountain rescue operation," described operation leader Stefan Koller.
Due to a lack of rain gear, headlamps, bivouac bags, and suitable footwear, the family faced significant challenges over the 17-hour hiking duration and were unaware of the impending danger. It is essential to meticulously plan a mountain tour, paying attention to weather conditions and snow situations to ensure hiker safety.
Experts typically recommend physical conditioning, weather monitoring, honing navigation skills, obtaining appropriate gear and clothing, maintaining communication, seeking shelter and resupply from mountain huts, considering guided hikes, and preparing for emergencies.
