Whether you're heading to the sun-soaked shores of the south, the picturesque landscapes of the west, or the enchanting cities of the east for Whitsun getaway, saving some extra cash for your first scrumptious ice cream is a smart move! But to do that, you need to fill up at strategic spots along the way. Here's a lowdown on where to find the most affordable fuel for your petrol or diesel tank.

Journeying South

If Austria is just a pit-stop, examine your destination carefully. Petrol costs 22 cents less in Austria compared to Germany, while diesel is 6 cents cheaper. But, if Austria is merely a transit country, consider the destination: petrol is pricier in Italy than in Austria, but cheaper in Slovenia, Croatia, or Hungary. So, it might be wise to drive a bit further or fill up only halfway in Austria. Fuel prices in Slovakia marginally differ from Austria, with diesel being cheaper, making it a cheaper alternative to Germany.

Switzerland may not be the best choice for fueling your tank. Although official EU Commission figures aren't available, information from Touring Club Switzerland suggests that fuel is more expensive in Switzerland compared to Germany, Italy, or France. If you're driving through Switzerland towards Italy, fill up before you reach Italy, as the destination country is also pricy.

Winding Westward

France is almost at par with Germany in terms of fuel costs. If Spain is your target, you can save a substantial amount in the destination itself. Belgium offers cheaper petrol (16 cents cheaper) but dearer diesel (7 cents more) compared to Germany. The Netherlands is 17 and 7 cents more expensive for both fuels, while Luxembourg is the cheapest western country, providing savings of 24 and 16 cents for petrol and diesel respectively.

Riding Eastward

The Czech Republic beats Bavaria as the cheapest neighboring country for fuel. You can save 35 cents on super petrol and 22 cents on diesel here. Even countries like Hungary or Slovakia can't beat that.

Northern Expedition

If you're heading northeast to Poland, you can fill up very cheaply there. Enjoy savings of 35 cents on super petrol and 18 cents on diesel. But, when bound for Denmark, fill up before you arrive. Super petrol costs 23 cents more in Denmark than in Germany, while diesel is 14 cents pricier.

Price Disparities

The disparities in fuel prices are generally due to different taxes and duties. Fluctuations in oil prices affect all countries, but the differences - based on data from 26th May with fresher figures not yet accessible - are relatively stable.

Prices can vary based on petrol station, time of day, region, and whether you're filling up on the motorway or a country road. The differences are often lower directly before and after the border.

Modifying your route for cheaper fuel and tolerating detours is seldom beneficial. Not only does it waste time and negatively impact the environment, but even when considering cost at 30 cents per kilometer driven, the advantage dwindles.

Those unwilling to fuel abroad should do so in the evening before departure, as fuel is generally cheaper then compared to mornings.
