European Roller Makes a Comeback in Tarragona's Alt Camp Region
A major conservation project, the European roller's return to the Alt Camp region of Tarragona, has begun. This initiative, coordinated by the Climate Action Area, aims to reintroduce the bird and boost biodiversity. The Barcelona Provincial Council leads the effort, backed by almost €19 million in funding.
The project, starting in 2023 and set to conclude in 2028, initially installed nest boxes nearly a decade ago. It focuses on monitoring biodiversity in fallow lands and aims to expand the Local Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation across 19 Catalan territories.
The European roller's reintroduction mirrors past successes, like the European heron's restoration. This project seeks to increase the resilience of vulnerable economic activities and support biodiversity. By recovering agricultural land, the bird has made a comeback in the Alt Camp region.
The European roller conservation project, funded by the European Commission, is well underway. With almost €19 million invested, it aims to reintroduce the bird, boost biodiversity, and adapt to climate change across Catalonia. The project's success will depend on continued collaboration between governments, socio-economic agents, and knowledge institutions.
