Europe's Unsung Gem: Luxembourg City Unveiled as a Hidden Jewel
Luxembourg City: The Hidden Gem of Europe
My pals all reacted the same way when I mentioned my plans to check out Luxembourg City. Boredom was written all over their faces. But boy, was I surprised!
I'd imagined a sterile, modern city when it came to 'tax havens' and 'business centers', but Luxembourg City turned out to be anything but. This place exceeded my expectations in every way, making it the perfect weekend getaway.
The country is tucked between Belgium, France, and Germany, but I wasn't planning on leaving the city for a dosage of nature. Little did I know I'd find one of the most underrated cities in Europe right here.
Luxembourg City has been a UNESCO World Heritage site for over twenty years, and it's easy to understand why. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg may have just hit its 200th birthday, but its history goes much deeper than you'd think.
Soak up the History
Sure, it's a city and a country, but a visit to Luxembourg is worth every penny.
The Medieval Ramparts are the star of the show, with various levels in the old city that offer up a wonderful few hours of wandering and sightseeing. The 23km casemates tunnels and bunkers are a must-see, even if access to many of them is limited.
The bridges, ah, who doesn't love a good bridge? Walking over these always feels like I'm right in the middle of Hogwarts.
The 16th-century Grand Ducal Palace might not be as grand as some, but its exterior is a feast for the eyes. If you visit during the summer months, you can check out the stunning interior too.
Essentially, there might not be a plethora of activities here, but the combination of history, culture, and natural beauty more than makes up for it. And let's not forget all the museums – there are more than enough to keep you busy! The National Museum of History and Art is particularly impressive, featuring an array of Luxembourgish paintings that rival those from Flanders.
The city's modern side shines with its futuristic buildings, like the Concert Hall.
Eat, Eat, EAT
Given it's landlocked between three fantastic countries, the food offerings here are nothing short of incredible. Parisian-perfect pastries for breakfast, Michelin-starred restaurants for dinner – you're spoiled for choice.
The national dish, smoked pork collar and broad beans, might not be everyone's cup of tea, but plenty of other delicious options await. Head to Restaurant La Sud for an extensive and beautifully arranged menu, or splurge at the starred La Distillerie in Chateau de Bourglinster.
Where to Stay
I've visited Luxembourg City twice, and each time I've enjoyed a different side of it.
If you're feeling extravagant, the Sofitel offers stunning views of the city, impeccable service, and spacious rooms. For a more affordable option, the YHA hostel is clean, slick, and centrally located – perfect for a low-budget weekend getaway.
Further Afield
There's plenty more to explore beyond the city, like the charming wine-producing town of Schengen and the picturesque city of Vianden. Don't forget to visit the nature parks, go hiking, or explore the green wine regions. Check out Visit Luxembourg for inspiration!
