Inspects Quinta do Pinheiro, a laid-back farmhouse located in the Algarve region
Nestled in the fringes of Ria Formosa Natural Park, Quinta do Pinheiro, a 35-hectare agricultural estate in Portugal, has recently opened its doors as a hotel. The property, located at 8800-108 Luz, Portugal, offers a wilder experience than the area's more established vacation hotspots.
Originally intended as a family hideaway, the estate was purchased by Dutch couple Martijn Kleijwegt and Monique Snoeijen in 2021. Renowned Portuguese architect Frederico Valsassina oversaw the structural renovation, while his daughter Marta Valsassina handled the interior design. The result is a collection of five two-to-three-bedroom houses, each featuring spacious living areas, full kitchens, and some outdoor areas. Decorative details include sculptural blonde wood dining sets, Futah wool blankets, and lighting systems by brands like Anglepoise and Santa & Cole.
The property remains surrounded by pine trees, olive groves, orchards, and vineyards, with wine bottling handled by a local vintner. Guests can enjoy waterfront yoga sessions at Praia da Barra Velha, and local wellness practitioner Michele Surya offers massages in guests' casas. A small movement studio is available for workouts.
The hotel's design aims to uphold the farmhouse origins while adding a contemporary flair to the guest experience. Breakfast and light snacks are served at the hotel, and local chefs can be booked for in-home meals or cooking classes. This summer, Amsterdam-based chef Ben van Geelen is hosting a culinary residency at the quinta, preparing dinners for in-house guests.
The owners' vision for the quinta is to expand but maintain the absence of discomfort as its core principle. Plans for a larger fitness room, hammam, and plunge pool are in the works for the new wellness area. The hotel also does not have a minibar, but full-size Smeg fridges can be stocked with groceries ahead of your stay.
Quinta do Pinheiro is a 30-kilometer drive east of the airport in Faro and 10 kilometers west of the town of Tavira. Rates for a stay at Quinta do Pinheiro start from 300 €. The hotel team consists of people who have been part of the owners' network for a long time, ensuring a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests.
With its unique location, rustic charm, and modern amenities, Quinta do Pinheiro offers a memorable getaway for those seeking a wilder, more authentic Algarve experience. The owners' plans to expand the estate while maintaining its core principles promise an exciting future for this boutique hotel.
