Nestled in the quiet and charming district of Cannaregio, the Orient Express Palazzo Donà Giovannelli stands as a testament to Venice's rich history and the grandeur of the Orient Express brand. Originally built in 1436, this meticulously restored 15th-century palazzo offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern elegance.

The palazzo, which was once the private residence of the Dona and Giovannelli families, great patrons of the arts, boasts a spectacular Neogothic façade with seven finely carved Gothic windows overlooking the Rio de Noale canal. The building, which was built during the reign of architect Filippo Calendario, the architect of the Doge's Palace, has hosted significant events, including the 1548 wedding of the Duke of Urbino’s son to Princess Vittoria Farnese.

After an eight-year restoration led by architect and interior designer Aline Asmar d’Amman, the palazzo is set to reopen as a luxury hotel in April 2026. The restoration preserves original frescoes, mosaic floors, and details like the 19th-century octagonal staircase and Murano chandeliers, combining historical grandeur with modern elegance.

Accommodations and Amenities

The hotel offers 47 accommodations, including 6 Signature Suites on the piano nobile and 2 Orient Express Apartments, all with canal views and heritage details. Guests can enter the hotel by private boat through a 15th-century Gothic portal or on foot via Santa Fosca’s garden, creating a unique, cinematic welcome.

Public and event spaces include the baroque Vittoria Ballroom, ideal for exclusive events and celebrations, and the lapis-hued Library of Cultures for relaxation and reflection. The hotel also features a Music Room celebrating Venice’s Golden Age.

Culinary Offerings

Dining options include an intimate fine dining restaurant accessible by private boat, an all-day dining room overlooking a courtyard and lush garden, and a rail-inspired Wagon Bar, all designed to provide intimate, narrative-rich culinary experiences suited for luxury travelers.

Future Projects

This hotel is part of a broader expansion by Orient Express, which includes the luxury La Dolce Vita train (revival of the original Orient Express), and forthcoming sailing yachts planned to extend the legacy of refined travel experiences beyond the hotel itself.

Overall, the Orient Express Palazzo Donà Giovannelli combines Venice’s deep historical layers with the modern luxury and nostalgic spirit of the Orient Express brand, positioned uniquely on the original route of the Orient Express train to Constantinople and serving as a new icon for hospitality and travel heritage in Venice.

  1. In partnership with LVMH, the owners of the Orient Express brand, the Palazzo Donà Giovannelli will also collaborate with Accor, a global leader in lifestyle, home-and-garden, and travel experiences, to enhance the luxury offerings at the hotel.
  2. Upon visiting Venice, travelers seeking an immersive experience in Italy's rich history and culture can look forward to staying at the Orient Express Palazzo Donà Giovannelli, a unique blend of Renaissance elegance and contemporary lifestyle amenities, located on the original route of the Orient Express train.
