Masses of tourists flocking to the Hessian region of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön, administered by the UNESCO authorities.
The Rhön region played host to a memorable weekend as the 15th Rhoen Hiking Day and the Hilders Heimatfest came together on August 10th. This unique event, held at the Hessian Administrative Centre of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön, offered an unparalleled blend of outdoor activities, cultural celebrations, and educational experiences.
The 15th Rhoen Hiking Day is an annual event that encourages exploration of the natural wonders of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This year's open day at the administrative centre featured a diverse program aimed at educating and engaging the public about the biosphere reserve's natural environment, conservation efforts, and local culture.
Ranger David Schmitt led a family hike on the bird watching trail in the Ritterschlucht, while guided tours through the administrative centre provided insights into the work of the biosphere reserve and the nature park Hessian Rhoen. The Junior Rangers presented their work alongside Ranger Hubert Stumpf at a station along the premium hiking trail.
Meanwhile, the Hilders Heimatfest offered a vibrant celebration of the region's cultural heritage. The festivities included local delicacies, live music, a bustling market atmosphere, and a convivial atmosphere. Children had opportunities for creative activities such as face painting, crafting, drawing, and using a button machine.
The biosphere exhibition on the ground floor and the creative land art exhibition by the Junior Rangers were popular attractions, and the LIFE presentation trailer on "Rhoen Mountain Meadows" provided information about species-rich habitats. The environmental mobile RUMpeL offered interactive learning stations, and the biosphere quiz offered challenges, prizes, and opportunities for learning.
Participants in the family hike learned about the secrets of the feathered Rhoen residents, and children built an insect hotel during the event, which is a piece of species protection. The event was a joint effort with the municipality of Hilders, the Rhoen Club Hilders, the Rhoen GmbH, and the Hessian Administrative Centre of the Biosphere Reserve.
In addition to the hiking day and the Heimatfest, visitors could purchase regional products directly at the stand, as the Verein Natur und Lebensraum Rhoen e.V. presented a selection of products from the Rhoen brand. The open day at the Hessian Administrative Centre of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön was a testament to the region's commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage while celebrating its unique character.
