Mill close to Romania's Mud Volcanoes repurposed as a venue for gradual food education and gastronomy learning
In the heart of Romania's Land of Buzău, a region renowned for its rich natural and cultural heritage, a new initiative is taking shape. "The Mill Between Fire and Earth" is a cultural-tourism project that aims to develop sustainable tourism, highlighting the area's unique historical sites, traditional crafts, natural landscapes, and local stories.
The project's focus is on restoring and promoting traditional mills and other heritage structures, serving as gateways to exploring the cultural identity of the region. By attracting visitors interested in authentic, experience-based tourism, it seeks to stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and support small businesses.
The Mill Between Fire and Earth is more than just a restoration project. It is a holistic approach to cultural and sustainable tourism, aiming to enrich both visitors' experiences and the well-being of the Land of Buzău's inhabitants. The project's estimated budget of EUR 150,000 is sourced from the mayor of Scorțoasa, local sponsorships, income from educational and commercial activities, and national contributions.
The restored mill will be transformed into an interactive culinary education center, offering baking workshops, culinary demonstrations, exhibitions on milling traditions, and activities for children and visitors. More than 20 local partners and producers in the Scorțoasa and Mud Volcanoes area will be primary sources for Slow Food products, promoting direct sales for local producers and educating young people on traditional values.
The project is a collaborative effort between the Scorțoasa Municipality and various local partners, with the aim of revitalizing regional heritage and promoting environmental awareness. The Scorțoasa Local Council has approved the project, and the next steps include the final design, mill restoration, and its eventual opening to the community and visitors.
Organizers invite financial sponsors, donors of eco-friendly materials, and volunteers to contribute to the project. The center will support local producers through an artisanal shop featuring Slow Food products. Contributors may receive official recognition both locally and nationally for their contributions to this unique project.
With over 100,000 tourists visiting the Land of Buzău annually, The Mill Between Fire and Earth is seen as an important economic and social benefit for the Scorțoasa commune. For more information or to get involved, please visit irina.marica@our website.
