Mountain rescue units in Spain are currently scouring the Pyrenees in a bid to locate a missing American hiker.
In the picturesque Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park in Spain, specialist mountain rescue teams and helicopters are searching for missing American hiker, Cole Henderson. The 27-year-old, who hails from the United States, has been missing for eight days.
Cole Henderson, a graduate of Rhodes College in Tennessee with a degree in Computer Science, was last heard from on July 9. He had planned to climb Monte Perdido, the third-highest peak in the Pyrenees. On July 12, Henderson missed his flight home to the Netherlands, raising concerns among his friends and family.
On July 14, Henderson was reported missing. His car was found in Torla, a town to the west of the national park. The route from Torla to Monte Perdido is rated as "Peu Difficile" (PD), meaning "somewhat difficult" by the climbing community.
Monte Perdido stands at 3,355 meters (11,007 feet) and is known for its challenging terrain and steep climbs. The hiking routes often feature steep slopes and can be physically demanding, requiring a good level of fitness and hiking experience. Proper physical preparation, adequate gear, and respect for the mountain conditions are critical to safety on this trail.
The climb of Monte Perdido is classified as medium difficulty with very steep sections. Climbs can be tough, involving steep ascents that demand endurance and sure-footedness. Proper equipment, such as good hiking boots, sufficient water, food, and weather-appropriate clothing, including rain protection and insulation layers, are essential. Navigation skills or a detailed map/GPS are advised because trails can be demanding and less marked at higher altitudes.
Hikers are also advised to start early to allow enough time for ascent and descent safely within daylight. Acclimatizing if coming from lower altitudes, staying on established trails, being prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, hiking with a partner or group, and informing someone about your planned route and expected return time are all important safety tips.
CNN reported that the Guardia Civil provided details about Henderson's missing car and flight to them on Wednesday. Social media footage shows the normal route from Torla, where Henderson's car was parked, still covered in snow in early July. Max Senoff, Henderson's friend, shared the information about Henderson's disappearance in a Facebook post published on Tuesday.
The search for Cole Henderson continues, with the hope that he will be found safe and returned to his loved ones soon.
