Netflix debuts a documentary chronicling a cruise transforming from a dreamy escape to a disastrous ordeal

Sailing into Disaster: The Unforgettable Poop Cruise

Embark on a Journey of Horror, but be warned, this ain't no ordinary cruise! The Poop Cruise, the latest addition to Netflix's Trainwreck series, recounts the infamous 2013 voyage aboard the Carnival Triumph.

Now, I ain't one to shy away from a good time at sea, but this documentary is guaranteed to make you think twice about booking that cruise vacation! The cruise ship was supposed to be a dreamy four-day sojourn from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico. But an engine-room fire changed everything.

With around 4,000 people stranded in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship was left without power, air conditioning, or the unmentionable—working toilets. Passengers were forced to become resourceful, using showers, sinks, and, God forbid, plastic bags to cope with their basic needs. One crew member candidly admits, "We can do a number one in the shower."

One passenger recalls the blissful expectations of the trip, stating, "We just love going on cruises. The food, the pool, the water slide. I mean, what more could you ask?" Another expected the bachelorette party of her dreams. But the lights went out, the ship was dead in the water, and the Poop Cruise had begun.

The docudrama opens with images of a glorious ship and smiling holidaymakers frolicking by the pool. It's a stark contrast to the grim reality that ensued.

Helpfully, plenty of passengers had cameras capturing the dramatic events, and even TV networks hired boats to document the chaos.

The situation went from bad to worse as people lost their cool and fighting broke out. In the words of another passenger, "It's like something that came out of a nightmare movie."

Netflix summarizes the documentary as such: "After an engine room fire destroys electrical cables supplying the entire ship, the boat is left drifting with no power for propulsion, refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning, or the unspeakable—working toilets. Soon, raw sewage leaks out all over the ship, food supplies start dwindling, and passengers begin to revolt."

Fortunately, the cruise line eventually managed to dock in Mobile, Alabama, after five grueling days at sea. The company pledged to pay for passengers' onward travel and fully reimburse them for the trip, offering additional compensation methods as well.

Fast forward to now, and Trainwreck: The Poop Cruise is streaming on Netflix. If you're in for a rollercoaster of emotion and are looking for more recommendations, check out our Best Shows on Netflix guide.
