Paris' Centre Pompidou Expands to Brazil Through a Related Project in Foz do Iguaçu

In a significant cultural development, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France, is set to establish a foothold in Brazil, albeit indirectly. While the storied institution undergoes a five-year renovation due to asbestos removal and other necessary repairs, a related project, the Pompidou Center Paraná, is taking shape in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil's neighboring state.

Although not technically a branch of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Pompidou Center Paraná aims to promote artistic production in Latin America and highlight the cultural dynamism of the Three Borders region, comprising Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Located in Foz do Iguaçu, the center will showcase modern and contemporary art, stage performances, festivals, film series, conferences, and artistic residencies.

Known for using sustainable materials like ceramic bricks and integrating structures with their surroundings, the project is the creation of Paraguayan architect Solano Benítez.

Originally opened in 1977 and named by former President Georges Pompidou, the Centre Pompidou in Paris is a renowned museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The museum boasts the largest modern art collection in Europe and has attracted over 3.2 million visitors in the past year. However, it will close its doors in September for an extensive renovation that is expected to cost approximately 260 million euros and conclude in 2030. The museum's permanent exhibition, featuring works by artists such as Marc Chagall and Frida Kahlo, has been closed since March, with a portion of the collection slated for display in the Grand Palais upon its renovation.

The Centre Pompidou also houses a large library, a music research center, and departments for photography, design, and video. Even as it prepares for renovation, its influence spans beyond France's borders, extending to the emerging Pompidou Center Paraná in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil.

  1. As the Centre Pompidou in Paris focuses on its renovation, the Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a regulation on the protection of the environment, ensuring a sustainable approach for the Pompidou Center Paraná in Foz do Iguaçu.
  2. In addition to artistic production, the Pompidou Center Paraná will also host lectures on topics related to lifestyle, fashion-and-beauty, food-and-drink, and home-and-garden, fostering a holistic cultural experience.
  3. The vast influence of the Centre Pompidou is further evident in its impact on relationships, as visiting the modern art museum has often led to meaningful conversations among friends and families.
  4. The Pompidou Center Paraná in Foz do Iguaçu will offer a pet-friendly environment, welcoming visitors with their furry companions to enjoy the artistic exhibitions and various events.
  5. As travelers explore Brazil and the Three Borders region, they may find themselves shopping for unique souvenirs and local art at the Pompidou Center Paraná, while cars parked outside showcase the diverse styles and cultures found in these vibrant lands.
