Philadelphia's Iconic Hospitality Center Could Gain Historic Protection

The Philadelphia Hospitality Center, a circular icon along John F. Kennedy Boulevard, could soon gain historic protection. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia aims to make it a local landmark, with the city's support. Designed by Perkins&Will, the building has stood vacant for a decade after serving as the city's tourist information center.

Constructed in 1959 under Mayor Richardson Dilworth, the center is one of Philadelphia's most recognizable modern buildings of the International Style. It originally featured floor-to-ceiling windows to attract visitors. After being shuttered and renovated as part of LOVE Park's redesign, the building has been vacant for about a decade.

The city's Department of Parks and Recreation plans to issue a new Request for Proposal this fall, hoping to select a tenant by the holiday season. The Philadelphia Historical Commission is set to take a final vote on the alliance's nomination on Oct. 10, which could add the center to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.

If designated a historic landmark, the building's future would be secured. The city aims to reopen the building in early 2026, potentially hosting national events like the FIFA World Cup and the MLB All-Star game.
