Philippines to Make History as Frankfurt Book Fair's First Guest of Honour from Southeast Asia in 2025

The Philippines is set to make a significant mark on the global literary scene. In 2025, it will be the Guest of Honour at the prestigious Frankfurt Book Fair, a first for the country. With a thriving creative economy valued at PhP 1.94 trillion, the Philippines is ready to showcase its rich cultural heritage and literary prowess.

The Philippines' presence at the fair will be substantial. Over 400 delegates will travel to Frankfurt, with a Guest of Honour Pavilion (PHL GOH) spanning 2,000 square meters. The Pavilion, curated by Patrick Flores and designed by Stanley Ruiz, will host over 100 talks, readings, and performances, delving into various global issues. Among the highlights is a discussion on climate change featuring poet Marjorie Evasco and a musical performance of Ryan Cayabyab's 'Paraiso' by The Philippine Madrigal Singers and Song Weavers Philippines.

The PHL GOH project is a collaborative effort between the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Office of Senator Loren Legarda, who initiated the Philippines’ return to the fair and the Guest of Honour bid in 2017. The NBDB's Translation Subsidy Program has already supported the translation of 173 titles since 2024, further enriching the country's literary landscape. Beyond the PHL GOH Pavilion, the Philippines will have a presence at the Philippine Stand, Asia Stage, and Comics Stand.

The Philippines' participation as the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025 is a testament to its growing influence in the global literary community. With a robust creative economy, a rich cultural heritage, and a commitment to fostering international dialogue, the Philippines is poised to leave a lasting impression on the fair.
