Gas Up Savvy: A Whitsun Travel Guide for Fueling Wisely
Preparing for Pentecost Holidays? Here's How to Find Gasoline Locations Ahead of Time
Hit the road with savings in mind this Whitsun! Fill up at strategic petrol stations to secure enough cash for your first holiday sweet treat. But remember, the smartest fuel stops can vary depending on your destination. Here's a snapshot of fuel costs across popular routes, based on the latest EU Commission data:
Vacation Bound South
Gas is cheaper in Austria than Germany, saving you 22 cents on petrol and 6 cents on diesel. If Austria is just a pit stop, consider your destination: Italy has pricier fuel, but Slovenia, Croatia, or Hungary offer cheaper rates. Filling up in Slovakia is almost on par with Germany, while Sweden is less wallet-friendly.
Switzerland, despite having no data from the EU Commission, is more expensive according to the Touring Club Switzerland. Travelers headed to Italy should refuel before, as Italy has slightly higher prices too.
Westward Hobos
France is practically level with Germany, but Spain offers significant savings at the pump. Belgium and the Netherlands have higher costs for petrol, but Luxembourg keeps prices low with a 24-cent petrol advantage and cheaper diesel. Luxembourg is the cheapest in the west, offering up to 16 cents savings on diesel.
Eastern Escapades
Look no further than Poland and the Czech Republic for the lowest fuel costs near Germany, with savings of 35 cents on petrol and 18-22 cents on diesel. Heading further north to the Baltic countries means cheaper fuel, but it's still costlier than the Czech Republic and Poland. If you're traveling through the Czech Republic towards Hungary or Slovakia, fill up in the transit country for the best savings.
Northbound Nomads
Before you reach Denmark, fuel up in Germany: Super petrol costs 23 cents more, diesel 14 cents more there. Sweden offers budget-friendly fuel, with savings of 28 cents on Super petrol and 9 cents on diesel.
Price differences are usually thanks to different taxes and charges, with oil prices impacting most countries. The contrasts, based on a snapshot from 26 May, are relatively steady. Prices can fluctuate based on the petrol station, time of day, region, and whether you're on the motorway or a backroad.
Detouring for cheaper fuel usually isn't worth the time and environmental costs. Even if you factor in low driving costs of 30 cents per kilometer, the savings disappear quickly. To save a few extra cents, refuel in the evening before departure.
Keep these tips in mind to ensure your Whitsun trip is a gas-efficient (and budget-friendly) adventure!
