Quang Tri Welcomes 1,500 MW LNG Power Plant by 2031

Quang Tri province is set to welcome a significant power plant project, the Quang Trach III LNG plant, with a planned capacity of 1,500 MW. This project, along with the Quang Tri Thermal Power Plant project, is part of Vietnam Electricity's (EVN) proposals to boost power supply in the region.

Originally approved in 2013 under the BOT model, the Quang Trach III LNG plant faced reassessment due to shareholder changes and financing hurdles. Now, with the National Power Development Plan VIII in mind, the project shifts to gas to reduce toxic emissions. The plant is slated to start operations in 2031, running until 2035.

The plant, located in Phu Trach commune, will include an LNG berth and a 250,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tank. It is expected to break ground by the end of 2023. Meanwhile, the Quang Tri Thermal Power Plant project, with an investment of over VND55 trillion, targets a groundbreaking in Q3/2027, with the first turbine starting generation in Q4/2028. Full completion is expected by 2030.

Both projects aim to ensure a stable power supply for the northern region. The Quang Trach II LNG-fired power plant, with an investment of VND52.49 trillion, is expected to generate 9 billion kWh of electricity, setting a precedent for the upcoming projects.

With the Quang Trach III LNG plant and the Quang Tri Thermal Power Plant project, EVN seeks to bolster power supply in the region. These projects, aligning with the National Power Development Plan VIII, aim to provide stable electricity while curbing toxic emissions. Groundbreaking for the LNG plant is expected by the end of 2023, with the thermal plant following in 2027.
