Rare Hubley Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sidecar by Raymond Loewy Hits Market
A rare antique Hubley cast iron Harley-Davidson motorcycle parcel-post sidecar, designed by renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy, is set to hit the market. The motorcycle, in excellent condition for its age, is expected to fetch up to $2,000.
Founded in 1894 by John Hubley, the Hubley Manufacturing Company is famous for producing cast-iron toys with moving parts. This motorcycle, measuring 9" long by 5.5" tall, is a testament to their craftsmanship. It retains an original lift-up US door and is in very good condition, with no restorations. The sidecar, at 5.5" long by 2" wide by 4.5" tall, is also in excellent shape.
Loewy, the founder of his own industrial design firm, is responsible for the design of the accompanying radio. The Mephisto Bakelite Globe Tube Radio, measuring 16" tall by 11" in diameter, was designed by Loewy in 1933. It is listed for $2,390. The motorcycle's driver has some wear to the original paint, and the Harley Davidson on the gas tank is partially worn away.
Both the motorcycle and the radio are expected to sell for significant amounts, reflecting their rarity and historical significance. The motorcycle's unique bulkiness and intricate paint jobs, along with the radio's iconic design, make them highly desirable collectibles.
