Exploring the Tequila Express: A Journey Through Mexico's Spirit Capital

Embark on an extraordinary adventure as you step aboard the Tequila Express, a unique tourist train that takes you through the heart of Jalisco, Mexico – the birthplace of tequila.

The Tequila Express, a product offered by the state of Jalisco, starts its journey in Guadalajara and makes its way to the magical town of Tequila. This tourist train tour is only available on weekends and can be one-way or round-trip.

As you travel, the Tequila Express maintains a speed of between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour, offering passengers a leisurely journey through the tequila region, which is nestled between the slopes of the Tequila volcano and the Grande River.

Your journey begins with a guided visit to agave fields, where you'll learn about the cultivation of blue agave plants. Next, you'll venture to a distillery, such as the Tequila Selecto or Don Elias distilleries, where you'll witness both ancestral and contemporary methods of tequila production.

Throughout the tour, you'll have the opportunity to sample various types of tequila (white, rested, aged), often paired with traditional Mexican dishes to enhance the experience. Additional stops may include haciendas, viewpoints of the Tequila volcano and agave landscape, historic museums, and local bars like El Guero for tasting traditional drinks like cantaritos.

The luxury train known as the Jose Cuervo Express provides comfortable transport and a cultural atmosphere as it transports you through the region. First class passengers can enjoy à la carte food and drinks, tequila tastings, and more.

During your visit to Casa Sauza, you'll tour La Constancia aging warehouse and La Perseverancia factory. At Casa Sauza's agave field, a jimador teaches visitors about planting 'hijuelos', cutting the piña, and trying the center of the stalk or 'bola'.

The Tequila Express offers two classes on board: first and executive. Rates for the Tequila Express start at $1,150 pesos per person.
