A Tactical Shift: Forged Alliances Emerge as George Simion Reaches Out
Romanian Nationalist Candidate Establishes Contact with Orban and Hungarian Populace in Romania
In a surprising move, Romanian Presidential candidate George Simion, a hardline nationalist and leader of party AUR, has sought to broker truces with the Hungarian community and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as Romania prepares for the decisive vote on May 18th.
The controversial figure, known for his strong stance on immigration and foreign policy, emerged as the frontrunner in the first round of Romania's presidential election with 40.5% of the vote.
Simion paid a visit to our website Romania, where he expressed admiration for Orban and lauded the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians (RMDSZ) in Romania as a "serious political partner."
With the Hungarian community heavily voting against him in the first round, Simion wished to put forth an olive branch by acknowledging that they had their own candidate, and their vote was not against him, but for their chosen representative instead.
However, it seems Simion's effort to appease the Hungarian community might not be reciprocal. The Hungarian minority party, UDMR/RMDSZ, had thrown its support behind a united candidate, Crin Antonescu, in opposition to Simion. Party president Hunor Kelemen has openly criticized Simion and warned Hungarians that his election could pose a threat to the Hungarian community, their schools, and cultural rights.
Meanwhile, Hungary's Prime Minister remained cautious about voicing support for Simion, despite sharing similar views on Ukraine, the EU, and security issues. The Hungarian government spokesperson, Zoltán Kovács, has labeled Simion's party as anti-Hungarian, and the ruling Fidesz party even chose to withdraw from negotiations to join the Eurosceptic ECR group in the European Parliament after Simion's AUR party was admitted.
Time will tell whether Simion's olive branch will bear fruit or if the Hungarian community continues to stand firm against him.
