"Speeding up on China's growing market for senior citizen travel, silver trains are seeing an increase in pace"
In a significant stride towards catering to the growing elderly population, China is revolutionising rail tourism with the introduction of senior-friendly trains, often referred to as "silver trains." These trains are designed to offer a safer, more comfortable, and culturally enriching travel experience tailored to the preferences and needs of older adults.
The transformation in senior-friendly tourism trains has been propelled by government initiatives and evolving market demands, with the aging population being a key driver. In February 2025, several government agencies unveiled an action plan aimed at expanding and upgrading tourism train services that cater specifically to seniors. The goal is to build a nationwide network by 2027 featuring over 100 specialized routes and 2,500 annual departures, meeting the needs of China's growing elderly travelers, projected to exceed 100 million by late 2025.
The "silver trains" incorporate thoughtful features like anti-slip floors, emergency call buttons in bathrooms, and senior-friendly amenities including reading glasses, sewing kits, and first-aid kits. Specialized menus emphasize light, balanced flavours suited to older passengers. The trains operate on a "travel by night, tour by day" schedule, designed to respect seniors' physical limits by offering a slower pace, no rushing, and manageable daily plans. This model improves comfort and reduces exhaustion during multi-day trips across scenic and culturally significant locations.
Senior-friendly trains connect diverse regions, from southern Guangxi and Sichuan to the remote, scenic Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Trips can span 16 to 20 days and include stops at natural wonders, historic towns, vineyards, and other culturally rich sites, providing comprehensive and immersive travel experiences. The trains have undergone around 46 detailed improvements across 16 categories, such as safer bunk ladders, enhanced guardrails, dedicated medical rooms, and entertainment carriages that allow seniors to participate in activities, enhancing both safety and enjoyment.
New budget-friendly tourist train services have been introduced as part of the larger senior tourism push, making long-distance rail trips more accessible to elderly travelers, further supported by large-scale equipment upgrades and consumer trade-in programs. The trains also offer performances and interactive games to enrich the travel experience.
Passengers like Huang Zeqiu, who recently recovered from a wrist fracture, and Zhang Guiying, who praised the various activities onboard, have expressed their satisfaction with the "silver trains." Wei Yi, manager of the tourism department of Guangxi railway culture and tourism group, is developing more tailored routes for senior travelers.
Despite the "silver train" market being in its early stages, with limited trains and transport capacity, there is ample room for development and growth. Tuo Yanzheng, associate professor of College of Tourism and Service Management under Nankai University, suggests that "silver trains" should provide more emotional support to make elderly travelers feel respected, cared for, and valued.
As China's elderly population continues to grow, with over 300 million over-60s expected by the end of 2024, and active, travel-ready seniors projected to surpass 100 million by late 2025, the "silver train" market presents a significant opportunity for growth. The action plan aims to create a nationwide network of specialized trains for older travelers by 2027, reflecting a broader strategy to tap into the booming elderly travel market.
