Hamburg Airport's Bottle Recycling Project Celebrates One Year of Success

The joint initiative between Hinz&Kunzt, Hamburg Airport, and Green Dot, aimed at improving bottle recycling and supporting social causes, is celebrating its first anniversary. Over the past year, the project has made significant strides in increasing recycling rates at the airport and providing employment opportunities for socially disadvantaged individuals.

Background

The project was initiated to address two key concerns: Hamburg Airport's sustainability efforts and Hinz&Kunzt's mission to help homeless and marginalized people. Green Dot, a renowned German recycling organization, was brought on board to manage the logistics of bottle collection, sorting, and processing.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the project were to set up bottle collection points at the airport, channel the proceeds from collected bottles towards supporting Hinz&Kunzt's social projects, and raise awareness about recycling and sustainability.

Progress

Since its inception, the project has seen the installation of recycling points at various locations within the airport. These facilities encourage both passengers and staff to recycle plastic and glass bottles conveniently. Green Dot has been responsible for managing the logistics of the collected bottles.

The funds generated from the deposited bottles have been used to support Hinz&Kunzt's aid programs, creating additional financial support for social causes. The project has also boosted recycling rates at the airport, with over 350,000 deposit bottles collected by September 1st, financing three full-time positions.

Current Status

The project is ongoing, with plans to expand or refine collection points based on passenger feedback. It serves as a leading example of how environmental sustainability can be integrated with social responsibility in public spaces like airports.

Notable Achievements

Georgi, one of the deposit commissioners, has experienced a significant improvement in his living conditions. Previously living in cramped conditions, Georgi and his family now have an apartment, and his children have their own rooms. The team has also shown support during difficult times, stepping in to help Georgi after the passing of his father and uncle.

Uwe, another deposit commissioner, is grateful for the opportunity to earn his own money and avoid relying on welfare. He even manages to get up at 4:30 AM for early shifts. Jobs are secured for another year as part of the project.

The team celebrated the project's first birthday with a cake and photos taken in the collection room at the terminal. Stephan Karrenbauer, project leader and social worker at Hinz&Kunzt, is pleased with the project's success and the reliability of the former Hinz&Kunzt crew.

Despite initial conflicts between Hinz&Kunzt and the airport, which led to an online petition, the project has proven to be a resounding success. The cooperation project with the airport and Green Dot continues to make a positive impact, both environmentally and socially.

  1. Hamburg Airport's expansion plans for the bottle recycling project include analyzing feedback from passengers to refine or increase collection points, demonstrating the integration of environmental sustainability and social responsibility within public spaces.
  2. Besides generating proceeds for Hinz&Kunzt's social projects, the successful project has resulted in the creation of full-time positions, providing employment opportunities for those who were previously socially disadvantaged, like Georgi and Uwe.
  3. Achieving a significant milestone, the bottle recycling project has amassed over 350,000 deposit bottles as of September 1st, helping to finance the living improvement of Georgi and his family, among other beneficiaries, and consequently boosting recycling rates at the airport.
  4. The fashion-and-beauty, food-and-drink, home-and-garden, relationships, pets, travel, and shopping sectors could contribute to similar initiatives, collaborating with local organizations and recycling programs to promote sustainability and support socially disadvantaged individuals in their respective communities.
  5. In addition to providing opportunities for personal development and financial stability, the project has showcased a meaningful model for cooperation, resilience, and accomplishment, sparking hope and motivation for those who face challenges in their lives, regardless of the context – be it in the realm of lifestyle or elsewhere.
