Over the past few weeks, the US, Canada, UK, and Australia have adjust their travel advice for visitors to Germany due to ongoing concerns regarding potential terrorist attacks.
United States
The US State Department has placed Germany at Level 2: "Exercise Increased Caution." This move arose from the consistent threat of terrorism, with the potential for attacks occurring without notice in public spaces, even those visited by tourists. The advisory emphasizes that terrorist groups and lone actors continue to pose a constant threat in Germany and Europe, deploying methods such as knives, small arms, rudimentary explosive devices, and vehicles.
Canada, the UK, and Australia
Shortly after the US State Department update, Canada followed suit, advising travelers to "exercise a high degree of caution" due to terrorism concerns. Meanwhile, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) states that terrorists are "very likely" to attempt attacks in Germany, particularly in public places like restaurants, markets, shopping centers, religious sites, sporting and cultural events, and crowded spaces.
The FCDO's advice also includes a list of incidents from 2019 onward. The Australian government, on the other hand, continues to advise travelers to exercise normal safety precautions in Germany, yet acknowledges multiple attacks using vehicles or knives over the past year.
Though it stops short of recommending travelers avoid Germany, each nation's authorities urge caution, encourage monitoring local news, and advise following instructions from local authorities.
