TU Braunschweig & Fraunhofer IST Launch €4.3M H2-iNFFra Project for Sustainable Mobility
The Technical University of Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer Institute for Layer and Surface Technology IST are set to embark on a joint project, 'H2-Infrastructure at NFF - H2-iNFFra', from 2025 to 2027. This initiative, backed by around 420,000 euros, aims to develop sustainable mobility and energy storage solutions using hydrogen as the key technology.
The project, funded by the Fraunhofer IST and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, will see the comprehensive expansion of gaseous and liquid hydrogen infrastructure at the NFF. This will support both fundamental and application-oriented research in energy storage and propulsion.
The project is part of a wider initiative by TU Braunschweig and Fraunhofer IST to use the NFF infrastructure together and research technologies for the more efficient use, distribution, and storage of hydrogen. The 'H2-Infrastructure at NFF - H2-iNFFra [TUBS]' project, with a total volume of around 4.9 million euros, will run concurrently from 2025 to 2027.
Until now, fuel cells with a maximum power of 2 kilowatts have been tested at the NFF. However, within the next three years, drive powers of 5 to 200 kilowatts will be tested as part of this project. While hydrogen drives in individual mobility may have a lesser role, the NFF is convinced that hydrogen can excel in aviation, heavy commercial vehicles, and industrial applications.
The 'H2-Infrastructure at NFF - H2-iNFFra' project, officially funded on August 21, 2023, with around 4.3 million euros, is a significant step towards a climate-neutral future. The project aims to create a state-of-the-art research platform for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies at the NFF, fostering innovative solutions for sustainable mobility and energy storage.
