Unauthorized Airport Transfers in Majorca Pose Risks for Tourists and Legal Taxi Drivers

Holidaymakers visiting Peguera, Majorca, should exercise caution when arranging airport-to-accommodation transfers, as several unlicensed operators may pose threats to both travelers and licensed taxi drivers.
In Facebook groups focused on this popular tourist destination, the same names reoccur in conversations about affordable airport transfers—these individuals can be contacted through their social media profiles. However, the "Mallorca Zeitung" reports that these operators do not hold valid licenses for passenger transportation, using rental cars or their private vehicles. This practice unfairly competes with legitimate taxi drivers who pay taxes and abide by the rules.
Taxi drivers on the island of Majorca have long expressed frustration over the presence of unlicensed taxi drivers, often referred to as "black taxis." According to licensed driver Juan Planas, he pays €2,500 annually for car insurance, taxes, and maintenance costs to uphold his license, while insurance for a private car costs around €300.
Not all unlicensed taxi drivers use their personal vehicles; some rent or borrow cars to evade detection by the authorities. This illegal practice is not exclusive to Peguera and Calvià municipality; it is also prevalent in Magaluf and Santa Ponsa, where these operators target tourists at hotels and outside bars.
Safety concerns arise with the use of unlicensed vehicles, as legitimate taxi drivers are insured in the event of an accident, whereas black taxis drivers may not have such coverage. This regulatory loophole allows illegal drivers to continue their operations without significant consequences.
Calvià Police confirmed to the "Mallorca Zeitung" that 30 incidents of black taxi transport have been reported in the municipality since 2019. Authorities regularly conduct checks with the Balearic government and local taxi drivers to address this issue.
