Vietnam Travel Guide for UK Citizens: Visas, Weather, and Must-See Destinations

Vietnam, often referred to as the "land of the ascending dragon," offers a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty for travellers. Here's a comprehensive guide for UK citizens planning a visit to this vibrant country.

Visas

All visitors to Vietnam, except holders of passports from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), require a visa to enter the country. As of 2024, visitors from the UK can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days. This exemption has been extended until August 2028. For stays exceeding 45 days, a visa is required.

The main visa options available are:

  • e-Visa: This allows a stay of up to 90 days and can be used for single or multiple entries. The cost ranges from US $25-$50 and is valid for air, sea, and land entry points. Processing time is about 3–5 working days.
  • Visa on Arrival: This requires pre-approval letter obtained through a travel agency before arrival. A stamping fee of USD $25 for single entry or $50 for multiple entry is payable in cash upon arrival. This option is only available when flying into major international airports, not land borders.

To apply for either visa, UK citizens need:

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond the date of entry into Vietnam.
  • A completed visa application form and photos.
  • An approval letter (for visa on arrival).
  • Visa processing fees.

Currency and Electricity

The currency in Vietnam is Dong (VND). The most common electricity voltage in Vietnam is 220V, 50 cycles, and plug types A, C, and G are in use. Type C (European two-prong plug style) is the most common.

Weather

Vietnam has three different weather systems: Mountainous Far North (Sapa), North Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh), Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Danang), and South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc).

The rainy season is from April to September in the Mountainous Far North, and from May to October in North Vietnam. Central Vietnam experiences hot and dry weather from mid-January to late August, with October to November being typhoon season. South Vietnam's temperatures remain relatively constant throughout the year, with the dry season running from November to April/May.

Must-See Destinations

Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northeast of Vietnam, is known for its thousands of towering limestone islands. Sapa, located in the far north of Vietnam, is famous for its rice terraces and offers homestays in Hmong villages.

Central Vietnam offers the Hoi An Motorbike Food Tour, a culinary adventure through the streets of this charming town. In Hanoi, the Hanoi Night Lights and Food Tour provides a unique dining experience.

For those seeking a bit of excitement, Castaway Island booze cruises in Halong Bay are renowned for hosting the best parties in Vietnam.

Remember, tipping is not expected but appreciated in Vietnam, with a few exceptions such as guides and cleaning staff. Visa cards are widely accepted in Vietnam and most ATMs offer free withdrawals. During the Vietnamese New Year's festival of Tet, transport and hotels can be sold out, prices rise, and it seems the whole country is on the move.

With its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality, Vietnam promises an unforgettable travel experience. Happy exploring!
