Whisky Society Crafts Physical Memory Containers of Distinct Scotch Flavors
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has introduced memory boxes as part of their Flavour Hunters festival, a celebration of whisky month in May. In collaboration with psychologist Dr Ansgar Endress, Scottish chef Bruce Clyne-Watson, and rollercoaster designer Brendan Walker, these memory-stimulating boxes are available exclusively at SMWS Members' Rooms across the UK.
As part of the festivities, the SMWS has released six distinctive small-batch festival bottlings. Each box, designed to rekindle cherished memories, includes sensory elements such as touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound. For instance, the 'Nan's House of Tea' box offers Haggis spiced lamb breast, caramelized red wine pineapple, malt loaf, and toasted oats, while the 'Camping Out' box serves rabbit liver rillette, marmalade chutney, candied walnut, and nasturtium leaves.
Scottish chef Bruce Clyne-Watson has expertly crafted memory-evoking canapés to complement each box. 'Watching the Harbour Boats', paired with a peaty whisky, features smoky langoustine, seawater spray, and a smoke gun, alongside deep-fried Mars Bar with Irn bru and tobacco essence, evoking nostalgic seashore memories.
These sensory experiences, centred around the episodic memory, facilitate the remembrance of whole experiences and their long-term commitment. Moreover, these encounters, combined with whisky tasting, offer an opportunity to create new, joyful memories.
