Heidelberg, nestled among hills and overlooking the Neckar River, is a captivating university town in Germany that has become a favorite destination for travelers. This charming city, home to Germany’s oldest university, offers a rich cultural scene, enchanting landmarks, and an affordable price tag.

Helene Sula, a travel blogger who has visited hundreds of countries worldwide, considers Heidelberg her favorite city. The couple, who lived in the city for three years after moving from Dallas in 2016, were drawn to Heidelberg's classic vibe and rich culture.

Heidelberg Castle, a symbol of German Romanticism, is a must-see. Perched on a hilltop, the castle offers fairy-tale views and a glimpse into history with its Renaissance ruins and gardens. The city's mascot, Perkeo, is a significant part of local lore, adding to the castle's mystique.

The university itself is central to the city's character. The Old Campus features historically and architecturally interesting sites, including the Heidelberg University Library and the Church of the Holy Spirit, which offers superb views of the Old Town from its tower.

Heidelberg's lively market square, Marktplatz, surrounded by traditional heritage streets, cozy cafes, and eateries, adds to the city's welcoming atmosphere. The city balances cultural richness with affordability, making it attractive to travelers and students alike.

Tourist activities like river cruises, guided bike and Segway tours, and numerous festivals and markets throughout the year, including a wine festival, castle festival, autumn festival, and Christmas market, enhance the visitor experience without high costs.

The city is not small, with approximately 180,000 inhabitants, but maintains a down-to-earth feel. Heidelberg is known for its vibrant food scene, offering traditional German dishes like Sauerkraut and Wurst, as well as regional specialties like Käsespätzle and Flammkuchen. A complete meal in Heidelberg, including a glass of wine, can cost less than 20 euros.

The city's weather is another draw. Winters are generally tolerable with rare snow, while summers can get warm. The Philosophenweg in Neuenheim, the oldest part of the city, is a favorite hiking trail offering a great view of the Neckar and Heidelberg Castle.

Gasoline is more expensive in Germany compared to the US, costing around $2.21 per liter. However, the city is quite affordable for food and accommodation compared to the US. In 2016, the couple rented a one-bedroom apartment in Heidelberg for 1100 euros per month.

Heidelberg's rich literary tradition includes American writer Mark Twain, who spent time in the city and was inspired by it. Today, the city continues to captivate visitors with its breathtaking landmarks, vibrant cultural and academic life, fair pricing, and scenic romantic setting.

The couple, who now live in Montenegro, continue to promote Heidelberg, organizing river cruises to the city, particularly during the Christmas season, and sharing their experiences with their Instagram followers. For anyone seeking an enchanting European destination, Heidelberg is a must-visit.

What an intriguing lifestyle Heidelberg offers, where travelers can immerse in a rich cultural scene, explore a charming city, and experience affordable living, all while being captivated by enchanting landmarks and picturesque views. The city's vibrant food scene, lively market square, and annual festivals, such as the wine festival and Christmas market, further enhance this delightful European destination.
